Time for another round of collective wisdom regarding a poorly described car problem.

The car: Saab 9-3, 2007, 2.0T, auto

The symptoms: Upon start up vehicle has trouble maintaining a constant idle. For about 20 seconds it hunts. Sometimes is seems like it is about to stall but comes back up. After 20 seconds, it is gone and car idles normally. Car runs normally at all other times. This only occurs on a cold start up, mornings and sometimes in the evening on the way home from work. When running errands, symptoms to not present themselves. Forum searches do not turn up similar symptoms.

My guesses:

Carbon buildup in the throttle plate.

Dirty fuel injectors

My attempts at solutions

Cleaned throttle plate with throttle body cleaner and a q-tip.

Added a couple bottles of Lucas fuel system treatment.

Go!

For your time, an old car. I’ve really started to appreciate pre-war stuff lately.

Vacuum leak in the emissions system would be my guess.

That has been mentioned(people around the office) but a vacuum leak would be constant, no?

Depends on what your car is doing on a cold start. Something could be on vacuum actuation during a cold start that then gets switched “off” by a control valve, thus going to no leak because it has no vacuum applied. Something like a timing advance, maybe.

Choke pull off.

A choke? In a 2007?

Sorry, channeling old Click ‘N Clack there in a pathetic attempt at humor. I’ll go back under my rock now.

I don’t think it would be a fuel issue. Othewise it would also run poorly while driving.

My guess is either emissions or a fast idle air valve or similar device. Although being a ‘07 I doubt it’s the latter.

My thought with the fuel is that it was a pressure issue. The jets had junk buildup and low pressure at startup would result in poor performance. Once pressure had built up, everything was fine. That was the logic anyway. I don’t know how sound it is though....

Pressure usually builds up very fast. There’s a valve that hold fuel pressure when not running and if that fails the only thing itll do is crank longer at start up.

I’d check the EGR valve first. I know they can get clogged with carbon and they open or close at start up. Maybe it’s clogged up.

I’ve seen EGR cleaning kits at parts stores but have never used one before.
